We’re a nation of pig lovers, from Miss Piggy in the Muppets to Piglet from Winnie the Pooh; we can’t get enough of the pink little creatures, and as a nation we’re certainly fans of a bacon sandwich or two! What many are unaware of, however, are the harsh conditions suffered by millions of pigs worldwide.
In modern farming systems, pigs are often confined to tiny living spaces for extended periods, completely restricting movement and natural behaviour. They are often subjected to overcrowding, lack of bedding material, tail docking and castration without anaesthetic. In many intelligence tests, pigs outperform dogs and without appropriate environmental enrichment, behavioural issues can arise, causing frustration, boredom and even mental distress.
Join our campaign for a better deal for pigs. We’re calling for:
- Clear and consistent labelling on pig meat products
- A better law to protect pig welfare across Europe.
What we are doing
We launched our Rooting for Pigs campaign in January 2009. We’re campaigning to improve welfare conditions for pigs by:
- raising awareness with consumers about welfare conditions for pigs in the UK and other countries
- working with the British pig industry and retailers to ensure consumers are provided with clear and consistent production method labelling to help them make an informed choice when purchasing pork products
- working to achieve legal status for production method labelling definitions at an EU level
- working to secure amendments to the current legislation at EU level that covers pig welfare
