During a bullfight a bull is attacked by men on foot and on horseback with lances and harpoons. The matador forces the confused and exhausted animal to make a few charges and eventually he attempts to kill him with a sword. If not killed, the animal is stabbed repeatedly until paralysed.
When the bull finally collapses, the spinal cord is cut, but the animal may still be conscious as his ears and tail are cut off and kept as a trophy. Read more about what happens in a bullfight.
Bullfighting takes place in various formats all over the world but most regularly in Spain, Portugal, France, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Guatemala, and more recently, the USA.
The League Against Cruel Sports seeks a complete end to bullfighting anywhere in the world.
What are we doing?
-
We collaborate with other animal welfare organisations to lobby MEPs from the UK and other European countries to put an end to bullfighting.
- Tourism provides important revenue for the bullfighting industry, and 14 million Britons travel to Spain every year, making bullfighting a British issue.
- We persuade big businesses to drop their sponsorship or promotions of bullfighting, and have achieved success with companies such as British Airways and Ryanair.
- The League discourages bullfighting tourism and produces an online Ethical Travel Guide to help people make informed holiday choices.

What you can do
There are many ways you can help to end the cruelty and suffering inflicted upon bulls during bullfights. Listed below are a few simple ways you can really make a difference.
There are plans to establish bullfighting in China. Please send a protest letter or email to the Chinese authorities and let them know that bullfighting has nothing to do with Spanish culture and that the vast majority of Europeans are against it.Boycott bullfighting & the companies that sponsor them
- Sign our Worldwide Anti-Bullfighting Pledge. Don't visit a bullfight or a festival involving bull running, and ask your friends and family not to either.
- Boycott travel agents, tour operators, hotels, restaurants and companies that promote bullfighting, letting them know why you are doing so.
- Write to the Spanish, French and Portuguese tourist boards, telling them that, as a British tourist, you will be boycotting towns and cities that have permanent bullrings and are calling on them to shun this bloodsport once and for all.
Share what you know and get active
- Please tell us you support our aims, and we will keep you up-to-date with our campaigns.
- Contact the League with information on towns or cities that have permanent, active bullrings or to tell us about travel agencies and other businesses promoting bullfighting in the UK.
