Background Information
Over 90,000 seals, including 85,000 pups, are cruelly slaughtered each year in Namibia, making it the second largest slaughter of seals in the world next to Canada. This horrific hunt commences in July and continues for five months.
Seals are worth more alive than dead!
The seals are hunted for skins, fur and meat. The genitals are sold as traditional medicines and aphrodisiacs in the Far East. The entire sealing industry in Namibia is only worth around £400,000, yet wildlife tourism, including seal-watching, is worth millions, with considerable potential for expansion.
Hidden from public view
The Namibian authorities are determined to keep this brutal; hunt from public view. Film footage has been difficult to obtain in the past and the authorities and the hunters will clearly go to extraordinary and violent lengths to avoid the hunt becoming internationally publicised.
In July 2009, a group of hunters attacked two men filming the seal hunt. Police arrived after the attack and arrested the victims rather than their attackers.
